Plus we chat to the effervescent Petra Barkhof from Kidswear magazine about the launch of her new Scimparello magazine. In the evening we talk to Piero Iacomoni, President of Italian label Monnalisa whilst enjoying their beautiful garden party in the heart of Florence.
It’s important children’s shoes are comfortable, durable and if they can look rather wonderful in the process even better. Spanish label Novel Walk do just this, good quality manufacturing, sensible yet beautiful and very cool. They also have the most clever, eye catching photography campaigns. Definitely a label to check out if you are at Pitti 87 and Playtime Paris this coming season. We chat with designer and co founder Cati Ferragut to find out more about this little shoe label with huge potential!
With the show season about to start Pirouette is just about ready for a new round of One to Watch awards. As with last season we are looking for stand out young brands starting at Pitti Bimbo, Florence, then on to Dot to Dot in London, and finally Playtime, New York.
This season we have enlisted the special talent of Lore Laporte to design our Award. With her child like humour we were hoping to get something a little unconventional. We were not disappointed… Read on to learn more about Lore Laporte.
The Pirouette One to Watch Awards are about finding and highlighting some of the best emerging talent working in children’s fashion and design. We take our time to search through the many eye catching labels at Pitti Bimbo, Dot to Dot London and Playtime New York. There are many reasons a product, brand or collection captures our imagination and enthusiasm, whether it is with engaging design, responsible and sustainable manufacturing or a unique and original approach.
In our first AW19 Pirouette One To Watch Winner interview we are delighted to introduce you to Katie & Han (sisters and duo) behind the eye catching and imaginative childrens design company Mini Wallers. Mini Wallers create circular dreamlike wall decals. Through these multi-themed portholes Mini Wallers invites a child’s imagination to awake and create! In fact on some of their promo cards children have written their own stories. Clever, fun, engaging and a very good price point. Lets find out more about our winners Mini Wallers…
Sticky Lemon was founded mid 2016 by Simone, Lotte & Dorien. Whilst working on other design projects their idea for a quirky and bold brand became more and more serious. Eventually their first backpacks became a reality and Sticky Lemon was born. This brand was concieved for both little, and bigger kids who have an outspoken taste in the way they look. It’s colourful, bold and sunny. Colourblocking is combined with patterns and illustrations. It was a bit of family affair at the New York show which made for an absolute joy presenting the award. Sticky Lemon #Pirouette12watch winners ss18 Playtime New York! let’s find out more.
Like it’s name Anchovy is a unique kids label with a very strong USP attributed to the brand. With an artistry at the foundation and imagery unlike no other this independent kids label is hard to miss during a trade show. Last Summer at Playtime New York the circle dresses from the ss18 collection ‘hiding from the sun’ really stood out slowly and memorisingly turning on the architecturally designed stand, with gradients of soft pastel colours. The uniqueness of this label is to be celebrated, oh and I forgot to say amongst all this artistry the pieces remain incredibly functional and wearable. We chat with designer and founder Giedre Kose.
Balance bikes are now part of what seems to be every toddlers journey towards becoming a fully fledged cyclist. It’s hard for parents & children alike not to fall for Banwood’s balance bike. Both retro and modern mixed into a perfectly balanced recipe. There was a constant buzz around the Banwood’s stand at Playtime Paris last summer, their product is charming with a stylish look for those design loving parents and their offspring. In this #pirouette12watch winner’s interview we have the pleasure of chatting with one half of the design duo behind Banwood – Frida Jonsby.
Pirouette has long been an admirer of the creativity and storytelling of designer Alejandra Salvatore of Severina kids. So it was a real thrill when Alejandra accepted the invitation to design the new season’s Pirouette One to Watch Award. Hand knitted and embroidered, the ‘Spyglass’ is an inspired design and exactly what we are looking for…we chat with Alejandra to find out more about her design process, production and what core elements were important to the award… We love it and so will you!
This New Year we will be on the lookout once again to discover the most exciting emerging labels in kid’s fashion and design for AW18/19. And, for the first time, we start our search in Italy at Pitti Bimbo with both Florence & myself in attendance for the launch of the awards. The search then moves on to London with Dot to Dot and finally out to the states for Playtime, New York.
For this season’s awards, we have collaborated with the brilliant designer Alejandra Salvatore of Severina kids to create an exclusive One to Watch “Spyglass”. The Spyglasses will be presented to the winners of both the design and the fashion awards at each of the shows. So follow what we are up to at the shows and look out for the best emerging talent in kids fashion & design.
This Summer saw an extremely successful launch for Portuguese new label Barn of Monkeys. Their first collection gathered huge interest and accolade during the SS18 selling season, and rightfully so. This is a brand new label with an expansive range of references and wonderful storytelling contained in this, their inaugural collection. A favourite feature is the removable pockets with strong poppers typifying the high quality and detailing found in their garments. This together with impressive imagery and a strong brand identity means even at first viewing you can’t help but stop, look and find out more…
We chat with head designer David Pinto to gain some insight as to why their collection and label is stopping people in their tracks at the shows, becoming both the #Pirouette12Watch label winner and then going on to become the ‘Rising Star’ at Bubble London. Let’s find out more.
The Knit Planet’s rail really grabbed our attention at Dot to Dot London this Summer with their beautiful rich colour palette of machine washable knits for kids. Over and over again I heard visitors and exhibitors at the show use the phrase ” I wish that knitted jumpsuit was in my size”. Always a testament to the appreciation of a collection! This is not only a super wearable collection that can spread across seasons but once you get to see and touch the garments in person you can’t help but fall in love with them. Micky and Nicky Wang, the founders of the label work together as a team in both life and business. Nikky designing the collection whilst Micky focuses on marketing and sales. So let’s have a chat to our #Pirouette12Watch winners for fashion ss18 at Dot to Dot London, and find out more…
