Look out, Pirouette returns this summer to Dot to Dot London, Playtime Paris and Playtime New York on the lookout for the best emerging talent in kid’s fashion and design for the Pirouette One to Watch Awards SS18 but this edition there’s something a little different.
Tia Cibani Kids Aw17 collection ‘Wallflower’ is rich in colour and texture, diverse in materials and abundant in choice. All reasons why this NY based label was our One to Watch for fashion AW17 at Playtime NY. Tia Cibani is an experienced designer and this is her second foray into kidswear evident from the maturity of the collection. The label launched a couple of years a go and runs parallel to the Tia Cibani womenswear line. After speaking with Tia at Playtime NY it was evident how much she enjoys the children’s fashion industry and designing/producing fashion for kids. Bold, complex and with a hint of tribal ethnic roots, a beautiful collection from a talented lady. Let’s find out more from Tia.
Loopy Mango recently crossed over into the world of children’s design by creating a mini range of their popular DIY knitwear boxes. The pieces are gorgeously super chunky which on a little kid looks incredibly cute. Lets face it chunky is in for Aw17, and you don’t get much more chunky than Loopy Mangos fabulous range. The mini DIY kits themeselves are brilliantly giftable, bright and fun. Unbelievably the new mini DIY knit kits aren’t currently stocked in Europe, though this is bound to change very soon. Find out more about the AW17 Pirouette One to Watch winners for design – Playtime New York.
Bonjour are our One to Watch winners for design at Playtime Paris AW17. It’s of no surprise this label has amassed a large social media following with the stylist, designer and founder Anne Millet’s inspiring and captivating style. The Petite chamber noire (the little dark room) collection for Aw17 makes reference to the cinematographic and photographic world, creating a contrasted but subtle atmosphere as a photographer might reveal colours on photographic prints in a dark room. Wonderful moss greens and warm nudes are backgrounds to beautiful hand-block printed vintage flowers. We fell in love with the home linen, mattresses, quilts and the exquisite green in this collection. Let’s find out more about Bonjour, it’s designer and founder and share a sneak peek of Petite chambre noire.
New York based label lulaland was our first One to Watch winner in the fashion catagory at Playtime Paris. This fun mixmatching collection drew us in for a further look, different textures, whimsical prints and rich colouring makes for a bold beautiful collection and whatever the combination it will work. The aztec pineapple print was a favorite from the collection, Lula designs the prints herself and has them printed to organic cotton fabric. This is a rich and fun label, certainly One to Watch, let’s find out more.
Mini Stitches are our first Pirouette One to Watch winners in the fashion category. A part from producing a wonderful clothing line they are in fact a social enterprise kidswear label with strong ethical roots. We both found their enthusiasm and commitment to what they are attempting to achieve both infectious and inspiring.
The Owl and Dog Playbooks are the first Pirouette One to Watch winners in the design category. We were already familiar with their books but it’s always so nice (important) to see a product in the flesh and let it grab your attention. We also took the time to speak with the designers Yeonju Yang and Claudio Ripol to talk about these beautiful books.
Playtime New York had over 180 labels exhibiting this time round and what a fun and exciting show it was. Arriving from Europe it was really interesting to meet labels from the US, South America and Canada. Once again there were many labels manufacturing in their country of origin with an emphasis on conscientious sourcing. A trend we keep seeing, if it carries on maybe it will just become the norm amongst independent brands!
Playtime Paris had over 500 labels exhibiting this time round so finding the Pirouette One to Watch winners took a bit of footwork, but boy was it worth it. It’s important to say how impressed we were with the brands in the ‘New Now’ space, the emerging talent in this section was really great to see with each label exhibiting their own unique selling points. It was a shame not to have more awards to give out.
There was so much emerging talent at Dot to Dot that it made our job of selecting The Ones to Watch very difficult but what a lovely day walking through the show talking with the exhibitors and looking through the collections. So many were producing at their country of origin (in this case mainly the UK), which is great to see. So without further ado here are our Pirouette One to Watch winners from Dot to Dot London for ‘Children’s Fashion & Accessories’ and ‘Children’s Design’ …
