If you had a magic wand, what would you do with it right now? I would turn my little sister into a Turtle or I would fix everything, everything that was wrong

Kathryn

A place you saw when you were a child, and that made its mark on you? I used to spend a few weeks out of the summer at a day based art school in the soft hills of the Dublin Mountains. It was so green and beautiful with forests surrounding it. The air was crisp & fresh, the water in the creeks ran clear and the fields were filed with thistles and cow dung! I got to explore with every medium you could imagine & it was wonderful. I can still smell the moss & the freshness to this day

The place you love near your home? I am really fortunate to live in the North Bay of San Francisco. It is so beautiful here and I have quite a few favourite spots to hike or sit & admire the view. One of my most favourite spots is on the top of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin, sometimes you can be above the clouds with the open blue sky above & the beautiful golden hills surrounding you. The contrast of colours is amazing.

Where do you dream to go for your next family holiday We are going to Italy in September for my lovely brothers wedding

The film that you love to see with the whole family? We love to watch 80’s movies together. Life seemed so much simpler in the 80’s! I love that people survived & thrived without cell phones or computers!

The book on your bedside table? I have a stack of books by my bed & unfortunately I don’t get to read as much as I would like, I am usually too tired by the time I get to bed! My favorite is by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, I always have vivid dreams when I read one of her short stories.

Last thing you bought for Kaijsa? I bought my 15 year old a vintage soft pink silk skirt for her birthday, it has the tiniest waste that only a teen could fit in. She loves it & looks so elegant when she wears it.

Favorite pieces in your child’s wardrobe? I have 3 girls and they are all very individual, they have a strong sense of what they like & don’t like. They have started shopping in vintage stores & amassed a wonderful selection of oversized sweaters this past winter. My eldest has this beautiful blue woolen sweater that goes with every pair of jeans I own.

The online destinations that inspire you? There really are too many to mention! I love getting lost online & finding new independent designer & small crafts people that are making a living from doing what they love, its truly inspiring.

The product that changed your life? I recently purchased a hybrid car, the first time I filled up I was shocked. I found myself wanting to tell complete strangers how little it cost to fill up my gas tank & how far I could go on one tank of gas! I still can’t believe how economical it is!

What are your main current concerns? I worry that we are destroying this earth and that our children wont know or see some of the beauty of this world that we have grown up with & perhaps taken for granted. I worry that our waters are becoming more and more polluted & that we are destroying our natural resources. I worry about the never-ending senseless violence, the exploitation of the weak & vulnerable. I am concerned as to the long term effects on the generations that are growing up plugged into to technology….I could go on but I think that’s enough !

Do you have a big dream and if so what is it? I dream of providing a beautiful life for my girls, of watching them grow & flourish. Someday I would like to buy a plot of land somewhere beautiful & live in a Yurt.

Something that made you laugh out loudly recently? My girls make me laugh every day!

If you could reincarnate in another person, who would that be? I’m not sure that I would want to be someone else!

Anything you want to tell? I am launching a new website in a few weeks & have some really exciting collaboration’s coming up with some wonderful designers/artists like Radish Moon, HBB Industria Argentina & more.

Ruby has a passion for dogs, so walking Rufus, her big sheep dog is the best thing in life. She would even turn herself into a dog, if she had a magic wand! Her mother Kate Pietrasik is the owner & founder of Tootsa MacGinty.

Ruby

What is your big dream? To live with lots of animals.

Do you have special powers? Yes,Walking on snow. I went skiing in the mountains where my daddy lives.
I saw mountains for the first time and skiing on all the snow felt like magic.

Who is the strongest person in the world? ME!

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to help animals

Who do you admire? Kodi, the dog that lives downstairs. Because he is a beautiful dog.

What is the best thing in life? Walking Rufus my big sheep dog.

Are you scared of anything? NO! nothing

What makes you laugh? Kasey my cousin

Do you have a joke to tell? Why did the cow go to the cinema? Because he wanted to watch a mooovie!

Your favourite films? Toy story 1 & 3

Your favourite Books? The Gruffalo

Favourite Apps? All the Toca Boca Apps

The best holidays you ever had? Going to Edinburgh to see Granny and my cousin.

The next item you would so dearly love to get? A toy “Jessie” (from Toy Story)

If you had a magic wand, what would you do with it right now? Make me into a dog.

Kate

A place you saw when you were a child, and that made its mark on you? When I was very young (4-5 years old) we lived in Mozambique. My parents worked as a teacher and a midwife; helping others whilst really enjoying life has been a big goal for all of my family. This has always has a huge influence on me – choosing a career I really enjoy, creating products with a greater purpose and traveling and experiencing living in many different places.

The place you love near your home?
The John Madejski Garden in the central courtyard of the V&A. It’s wonderful that the museums in London are free and I am lucky enough to live only a 20 minute bus journey from the V&A; which means I can pop in just to enjoy a quick wander, a browse in the shop or a coffee in the garden and in Summer Ruby can have a paddle in the water feature! They hold themed events called “Friday Night Lates” on the last Friday of every month with workshops, a bar, DJ’s and a great atmosphere – We’ve been known to dance like loons to fantastic music in the main hall!

Where do you dream to go for your next family holiday? I would love to take Ruby to Australia. I’ve always thought what a fantastic country it’d be to be to experience as a child. We are real beach bums and so we would hang out with old friends on the beaches of Northern NSW where I lived for ten years.

The book on your bedside table? “Jodi Picoult – Harvesting the Heart” – about motherhood, beautifully written,“Tracy Thorn – Bedsit Disco Queen” – Tracy Thorns biography and “Steve Biddulph – Raising Girls” – Non fiction book offering advice on how to counteract the worrying trend of sexualisation & gender stereotypes aimed at girls and install confidence in our daughters.

The children’s brands your cherish? Any brands that are really thinking about the child first and foremost – rather than emulating adult fashions or pushing gender specific products.

The children’s stores you love to visit and buy from? Fenwick on Bond Street is little talked about but a real gem! Their selection of children’s clothing, toys, décor and accessories is fabulous. The staff are fantastic, friendly and helpful and the shop is just a real pleasure to visit. I like to browse in gallery and museum shops, The Conran shop, Scandium, Little Liberty, Bonpoint, Bonton, Petit Bateau and Caramel Baby & Child.

Last thing you bought for your child? Yesterday – A tub of frozen yogurt with blueberries, passionfruit and Oreo cookies from “Snog”. It’s our post swimming ritual!

Favourite pieces in your child’s wardrobe? My poor child’s wardrobe is full of Tootsa MacGinty prototypes!! – trial and error items from my factories that are slightly too short, too long, wrong colour or cancelled styles – At least they’re unique!

The online destinations that inspire you? Lots and lots of Pinterest & Twitter. Leastlittlething , Kottke and the Thecoolhunter.

What are your main current concerns? One of my biggest concerns and the reason for beginning Tootsa MacGinty, is the extent with which we are genderising & sexualising products for children. Childhood should be free from restrictions and we ought to be encouraging individuality not stereotypes.

Something that made you laugh out loudly recently? My daughter makes me laugh out loud every day without fail. Her dance moves are a thing to behold, this morning’s session had us both laughing out loud!

If you had a magic wand, what would you do with it right now?

Lyla: I am going to put it into my backpack first to be safe and then I will make a whole bunch of buildings for the people who don’t have homes. Then I will make castles. Jillian: Make magic all over the place. Poof my building into a castle.

Marci

A place you saw when you were a child, and that made its mark on you? Believe it or not, Disney World changed my life. When I was 10 my family and I visited Disney World for the first time. I took a tour of the animation studios. As I walked through and saw the artists at work I knew right then that I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to create art for the rest of my life.

The place you love near your home? I love all the riverside parks in NYC but most especially Battery Park. I love going there with my family and having the girls just run amok on the grass. The views of the Hudson are just so beautiful down there.

Where do you dream to go for your next family holiday? Honestly anyplace that is warm and has a pool the girls can swim in 24 hours a day. I think they were mermaids in their former life.

A film or cultural event that you saw recently and that staid with you? When a group of men and women dressed as fairies walked into a community garden, I knew this had to be the coolest event I had ever been to. It was called Harvest Day in the Gardens. We live on the Lower East Side of NYC and on this day all of the community gardens in our neighborhood hosted an open house. These gardens were derelict or abandoned properties that the local residents fought very hard to convert to community gardens that are now maintained and enjoyed by the local residents. Harvest Day was a day to celebrate what the community has done. The gardens are now beautiful. Each one has its own character and very strongly reflects the diversity, color and creativity of the residents of our unique community. My family spent the day “secret garden” hopping, as my daughters called them. Each garden had an activity or craft for the kids or live musicians or a dance performance, all kinds of unique and interesting stuff. It was a beautiful day.

The film that you love to see with the whole family? “Best Day Ever!!!!!!” My girls say that all the time now. They mean it, which is wonderful. Ramona Quimby said that quote in the movie “Ramona and Beezus”. My girls are big fans of the Ramona book series, and we recently discovered the movie. I love watching it with them. It’s all about being a kid.

The book on your bedside table? This book is amazing. Blood Bones and Butter. I love this story. This book is about the many kitchens Gabrielle, the author has journeyed through before opening up her own restaurant in the east village of NY. But it’s not just about food, it about struggling as an artist and finding your way through life, which I guess most of us can relate to. It really is an inspiring book.

The children’s brands your cherish? I really respect Melissa and Doug for bringing safe affordable wooden toys back to the mainstream market. California Baby, I also love for their safe products. I use almost all their bath products and lotions for my girls. I love the clothes at Mini Boden. I think half of the girls wardrobe is Mini Boden. But I will always have a soft spot for local designers like Brooklyn Junior. They have the cutest dresses.

The children’s stores you love to visit and buy from? Jane’s Exchange is the coolest consignment shop in the coolest neighborhood in NYC. I love going there. They focus on kids clothes and maternity wear. The owners know their customers, or at least treat you like they know you. Being located in such an international city as NYC, they have a huge international collection of clothes. And Exit 9, also in my neighborhood. They have the most unusual gifts for children. Very unique.

Last thing you bought for your child? I think it was the big box of wipes to wipe off the cotton candy I bought for them. Sheesh. Messy stuff.

Favourite pieces in your child’s wardrobe? Their tutus. Their little bums just look so cute in them!

What do you buy online? I am absolutely addicted to buying my groceries on Fresh Direct. So now I have more boxes to recycle and more boxes for the girls to make castles and ghetto snow sleds out of (and yes, it was the best sled in the LES of NYC). I also am a huge huge fan of Esty. This site has really helped up and coming artisans gain a huge audience, and have given regular consumers the opportunity to find unique products and gifts, made by small, independent businesses. It’s really a game changer. It helps us compete with Walmart and Amazon.

The online destinations that inspire you? The jealous curator, Arthound, Patternbank, Decor8. Everything on these sights are so visually inspiring. They motivate me on so many levels.

The product that changed your life ? First response pregnancy test!!!

Do you have a big dream and if so what is it? To create my art without thinking or second guessing myself. To move smoothly and not think about what may not work, to just create and move forward. Constantly move forward. Then, in this way, to create art for the rest of my life would be my big dream.

Something that you did in your childhood that you makes you laugh today? When I was 6 I took my 3 year old brother on his first amusement park ride. It was just a tiny little kiddie coaster. When it went to turn a corner it whipped you around just hard enough. I never heard him laugh so hard. It was the cutest thing. We all still laugh about it to this day. These little memories are the things that we all cherish most. Life is about sharing happy moments.

Something that made you laugh out loudly recently? When I went on this mountain coaster last vacation. I felt like a kid again racing on that thing. I couldn’t stop laughing.

Loïca

A place you saw when you were a child, and that made its mark on you? Arembepe without a doubt! I claim myself lucky to have been born of a couple of hippies in the 70’swho decided life was elsewhere! And that’s exactly where Arembepe 34 years ago: elsewhere. A small aldea in front of Salvador do Bahia where some people with the same ideals met. For a kid it was dreamland : freedom, beachm turtles, real treehouses,no shoes and a witch … I remember spending hours with her doing all the questions and her all the incredible answering.

The place you love near your home? L’Abbaye de Saint Michel de Frigolet , a walk in la montagnette and you belong to her! Collection Yvon Lambert in Avignon and Arles as a city is unique!

The book on your bedside table, the music in your ipod, the new app you love? Any of the Orson Scott Card’s book do the trick over and over again… Music: Listening lots of “ clavecin” lately. Apps : Paper 53 is my “marotte”

The children’s brands your cherish?

Having boys isn’t that easy fashion wise… I do classic Neck and Neck, Monoprix, Cyrillus, Marie Chantal…with some brands I am very fond of but couldn’t do a total look finger in the nose, Bellerose, Fred Perry…

The children’s stores you love to visit and buy from? There is not much around me and I must confess I am not really faithful to stores, they usually are one direction and I have trouble with that, so I do most of my shopping on the net.

Nico is the strongest person in the world and he is only scared by spiders, nothing else. His mother, Teresa Lagerman, is the founder of new e-store Brooklyn Makers.

Nico

Do you have special powers? Let’s see. I’m really strong like my friend Joaquin. He taught me how to play basketball from really far away.

Who is the strongest person in the world? Me

What do you want to be when you grow up? Two things. A baseball player and a chef.

Who do you admire? Marco. He’s my baby brother. He’s almost three.

What is the best thing in life? Ice cream.

Are you scared of anything? No. Well, only one thing. Spiders. But not anything else.

The best holidays you ever had? Christmas! We went to Florida with Grandma and Grandpa. When we were asleep Santa came down the chimney and put the presents under the tree.

Your favorite belonging? My Pocoyo. He sleeps in my bed

If you had a magic wand, what would you do with it right now? I would make a cow disappear. Maybe a horse, or any kind of animal. Even a spider. Or a parrot.

Teresa

The place you love near your home? Prospect Park is just down the block from us. It’s huge and very laid back. I love packing a blanket, some snacks and a couple of balls and going for an afternoon picnic with the kids.

Where do you dream to go for your next family holiday? When the kids are a little older, I would love to go to Japan. In the nearer future, we have a trip coming up to Provincetown that I’m really excited about.

The film that you love to see with the whole family? We love the Miyazaki’s movies (Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service) and anything by Pixar. I’m particularly fond of Ratatouille because 1. it takes place in Paris and 2. after watching it the first time, my vegetable-despising kid requested (and happily ate) the famous dish.

The book on your bedside table? At Home by Bill Bryson. I’ve been reading his books one after another. It’s a bit too much to absorb, but he makes it fun.

The children’s brands your cherish? I love our local makers – Kallio, Lady Handmade, Brooklyn Junior and Spoon + Tamago. Winter Water Factory is another Brooklyn favorite. I root for my other home (Spain) in terms of shoes – I always stop at the Pablosky factory near my parents’ country house when we’re there and stock up! I’m also a huge fan of Zara Kids, for inexpensive yet durable clothes.

The children’s stores you love to visit and buy from? My favorite kids shop in Brooklyn is Allegria in Williamsburg. Everything is beautiful but down-to-earth, and the atmosphere is laid back – you feel comfortable to linger. The owners are incredibly nice. Lolli and Toy Space in Park Slope are my go-to destination for birthday gifts. I also frequent local bookstores – Powerhouse in Dumbo is the family favorite. When I’m in Madrid, I love going to Baby Deli.

Last thing you bought for your child? Four weeks of summer camp! Ha. We just got back from Smorgasburg where he scored a chocolate ice cream from Blue Marble.

Favourite pieces in your child’s wardrobe? A hooded light jacket from Kallio. It’s so perfectly Nico. I also love his shirt from MUNY. Boys button-down shirts are awesome.

What do you buy online? We have the greatest online grocery store in NYC, Freshdirect. It’s such a huge time-saver, it takes me 5 minutes to do groceries from my couch. I also get drugstore items online at Soap.com. Both sites have apps, which I love – I’ve been known to do the groceries on my phone while walking back home from the subway.

The online destinations that inspire you? Design Taxi, Smitten Kitchen, Cool Mom Picks (and Tech), Spootnik, Brooklyn Exposed… Twitter!

What are your main current concerns? Gun control and equal rights. Yes and yes.

The product/purchase that changed your life? I was firmly opposed to getting an iPhone, and now I can’t function without it. My kids now think any phone should do video calls.

Do you have a big dream and if so what is it? I would love to continue growing Brooklyn Makers and be able to add new talent. Also, spend a summer in Paris. Sans kids.

Something that you did in your childhood that you makes you laugh today? As a little girl I would put myself on a time out whenever I thought I needed one, which amused my parents. I’m amused myself now to report that my younger son, Marco, does the same thing.
