Wall Stickers and wallpaper have been very popular in the last decade. Here’s a quick guide on the topic, featuring an interview with Idoia García de Cortázar of Spanish brand Chispum, a list of the top brands on the market, as well as a selection of products we love.
All About Wallstickers with Chispum
Idoia García de Cortázar and her husband Javirroyo live in Barcelona, Spain. In 2003 they started CHISPUM. It is very interesting to chat with this lively couple, passionate about design, passionate about life.
What – Chispum : A publishing house that creates innovative wallstickers and tattoos.
Who – Idoia studied Fine Arts and she also has a PhD in Modern Art History. Javirroyo studied graphic design and he’s a renown graphic designer and illustrator in Spain.
Facts – The company sells approximatively 15.000 – 20.000 vinyl pieces a year. Some 350 stores in Spain carry our products and some 150 in the rest of the world. And the numbers are growing ;-). We launch a new catalog every year, in September-October, to offer hundreds of new designs just on time for Christmas. Our new catalog will feature some 600 designs.
Team – There are 8 people working exclusively in CHISPUM. Aside, we collaborate with some 25 recognized illustrators and artists that each year create new exclusive designs for us. And this number is constantly growing as we love detecting new talents around the world and inviting them into CHISPUM “design family”
Production – All our product range is produced entirely in our workshop in Barcelona.
What’s the difference between a bad vinyl and a good one? A bad vinyl features poor design (often a copy), is made of low quality, toxic material. Aside, it’s boring and produces no reaction on the observer. A good one (like CHISPUM!) features exclusive design and interacts with the observer. Think about our multiplication tabs that help to math beginners, the fairy tales series that allow parents to tell a story before going to bed, etc. We love provoking positive and fun reactions, that’s our goal and it makes us unique and different!
What’s so special about Chipsum – One of the strongest CHISPUM points is working with top creators – renowned designers and ilustrators. Purchasing a CHISPUM vinyl means acquiring an art piece for a very affordable price. We process the original image such way that in the final vinyl piece you can still feel the line’s personality of each creator (think about the “New York Chrysler” design by Pere Virgili). Technically, it is a difficult process but is was crucial for us to achieve it.
What’s the best part in your job? It makes me especially happy when our customers e-mail us pictures showing how great is their new CHISPUM vinyl looking on the wall (or window, furniture piece, car, etc.), everytime it draws a huge smile on my face! It’s also very gratifying to work with children hospitals where we develop enviroment humanization projects. It’s amazing to have the feedback of the little patients and their families saying that our artwork made their stay easier and smoother. So fulfilling!
Clients – The list includes Centre Pompidou, Palais du Tokyo, Laurette Deco (Paris), Vinçon (main design store in Barcelona), JCrew (NY), Clic Gallery (NY), Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago, Actus (Japan), Fab.com, Alexandalexa.com and our website: www.chispum.com we send our wallstickers around the world :).
