A Look At… Shirley Baker:  Women and Children; and Loitering Men

I’m back!  Not quite back into the swing of things but back nonetheless.  This week, A Look At this focuses on Shirley Baker, British documentary photographer, who died on 21st of September 2014 and whose work is currently on show at the Photographers’ Gallery in London until September 20th.  Born in Kersal, Salford, Baker studies Pure Photography at Manchester College of Technology in the 50s.  Hampered by union restrictions on female press photographers, she abandoned plans in the early 60s to work for the Manchester-based Guardian newspaper, and pursued instead her own long-term documentary projects throughout her 55 year career.  Shirley Baker:  Women and Children; and Loitering Men focuses on this formative period.*
