Paris welcomes a new children’s boutique called Chou Fleur (cauliflower). This 35 square meter store is located in the 5th arrondissement, known for its concentration in universities, libraries and cinemas focused on good old classics. Founder of Chou Fleur, Véronique Suzzoni mixes toys, decor, clothing and accessories, but also events for her little clients : workshops, birthday parties, English for beginners. I’d say Chou Fleur “c’est chou”, which translates as “it’s sweet, it’s adorable”. Veronique (herself “chou”), answers a few questions, business related and more personal.

How long have you been in the children’s industry? It’s been a year. I left the world of communication in which I worked for 10 years to jump into the children’s market.

When did you open your store? In Novembre 2011

What brands do you carry in your store? Bellerose, Emile & Ida, Adri, Bobo Choses, Le Marchand d’Etoiles, Petit Pan, Rice Bakker made with Love, Fifi Mandirac, Kitsch Kitchen, Mimi Lou, Sonny Angel, Baby watch, Les Apprentis Rêveurs, Annabel Kern, Engel, Kiko Kids

What children’s trade shows do you visit? Playtime Paris and Maison & Objets

How does business compare to your expectations? To my surprise, decor objects and accessories are more successful that clothing. But with only two months behind me and the Christmas period which was mainly about presents, I can’t really make reliable conclusions.

Why did you chose this area? The 5th arrondissement is both a students and family area. My store is in the perimeter of a bunch of nursery schools and it also faces a playground where mothers gather after school. There are very few children’s stores in the area and mothers are very happy to have Chou Fleur at reach; they don’t have to go all the way to the 6th arrondissement to find beautiful brands anymore.

Your favorite children’s stores in your own city? Le Château de ma Mère (av Ledru Rollin, 12eme) but also the must see stores like Chantelivre, Serendipity, Muskhane, Bonton.

What are theinteresting places in your area? My favourite one : l’Avant-Comptoir in Odéon, to drink good wine and eat the tapas prepared by chef Yves Camdeborde. I also love the cinema MK2 Bibliothèque.

What inspires you at the moment? My two daughters

A magazine that inspires you? Doolittle

Your favorite bedtime story? Les p’tites Poules by Christian Jolibois

A movie you recently saw and that stayed with you? “La guerre est declare” by Valérie Donzelli

Your favorite movie to watch with the whole family? “La Mélodie du Bonheur » (The sound of music) by Robert Wise

Anything missing in the current children’s product offer? Nice party bags…but I am working on that!

Can you tell us more about the photos The work that photographers do around children’s fashion is for me a source of constant marvel. In regards to the collaboration with Gana (photos on top), I was transfixed by the beauty and personality of her daughter Themis, a particularly charismatic child (Themis is a model for Milk Magazine, Doolittle, for Belgium brands and others). Gana and her children are have the attention of very established brands and magazines, but she agreed with a collaboration when I presented my project to her. I gave her carte blanche and I was very happy with the result as she perfectly highlighted the retro and childish aspects of that part of my collection. The photographs of Clause Blaser are very moving and it was my dream to see my work through her eyes. I shyly asked her if she would consider photographing my collection and she immediately got enthusiastic about the idea. I think that Claude is, creatively speaking, my soul sister and the result of her work is beyond my expectations.

Easton loves to draw, has a wild imagination, and is very curious about life. He is (and has been since he was very young) obsessed with sea creatures and life under water (have we found the next Patrick Duffy?). Courtney Adamo, mother of three and writer/editor of babyccinokids.com tells us what she likes, buys, reads… One thing sure : Courtney takes great pictures of her kids.

Easton

What do you want to be when you grow up A scuba diver, a fisherman who lets the fish go, and an artist.

Your favourite famous personIggy Peck, Architect (from the book written by Andrea Beaty).

What makes you laughMy friends at school make me laugh. Especially my friend, Paul.

What makes you sad When I have bad dreams.

Your favourite book Go, Dog. Go!’ (P.D. Eastman) and ‘Beware of the Frog’ (William Bee).

Your favourite films ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ and ‘Ponyo on the cliff’ (Hayao Miyazaki).

Your favourite animal An Orca Whale.

The best holidays you ever had Living in a campervan in Australia (February 2010) and snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef.

A place that you would dream to visit I want to go back to Australia, back to the Great Barrier Reef.

Your favourite color Yellow.

Your favourite outfit The skeleton costume my Dada made for me last Halloween.

What is the piece you like the most from your wardrobe The yellow long-sleeve shirt Esther (mother’s friend) gave to me and the red scarf my mama knit for me.

Courtney

Your favourite children’s brands This is really tricky for me – there are so many that I love! But here are five that I find particularly good for boys:

1.)Bonton – so effortlessly stylish, easy to wear, easy to wash.

2.)ESP No. 1 – great fitting jeans – no tacky labels, no fancy pockets, just perfectly simple.

3.)Miller (by Elias & Grace) – also very wearable, a perfect balance between smart and casual.

4.)Spring Court – great Velcro sneakers!

5.)Maan – a bold, colourful Belgian brand (really great for boys)

Your favourite children’s stores Elias and Grace(London),Kids on the Docks (Antwerp), and Bonton (Paris)

What type of e-consumer are you? I find it really difficult to buy clothes and shoes online – I like to see them in person, feel the fabrics, see how the sizes run, etc. But I do buy books and gifts online.

A website that inspires you I know this has nothing to do with children, but I really love Design*Sponge – their ‘sneak peeks’ are my favourite.

The criteria you consider when you buy something for your children I make sure the quality is good enough that it will survive three children wearing or playing with it.

Last item you added to your child’s wardrobe A new pair of Aigle wellies – a necessity in London all year round.

Most precious item you bought for your child I can’t think of anything precious I’ve ever bought him – am I a bad mum? (He’s only 5, after all. And he’s a boy – he trashes his clothes!)

Best gift you gave for a child’s B-day I always give books – you can never go wrong.

Favorite pieces in Easton’s wardrobe I like his blue leather Spring Court sneakers, his Bonton tunics, and blue jeans from ESP No. 1.

The book on your bedside table I haven’t been reading books – I’ve been reading design magazines instead (we are renovating our house and I’m always looking for ideas). The last book I read was ‘The Help’ and it was so good I wish I could read it over again for the first time.

Where do you like to go for the summer holidays Every year we spend a week in Positano (Amalfi Coast, Italy) and it is my idea of heaven. We also spend a month every summer in Seattle with my family – my kids spend the majority of the time running around naked, which is wonderful!
