It was a dark rainy Sunday in New York for the 16th edition of Playtime New York but it didn’t hamper the vibrancy of the show. In fact Playtime registered a new attendance record of 2,114 professional visitors with the majority (45.3%) attending on the first day. As we stated in the Playtime Paris report, stand presentation is paramount for labels wishing to capture the attention of visitors, either that they know already or are on their wishlist. Certainly there was no missing Lulaland’s rich fabric wall and it was difficult to not be intrigued by the giant 4ft stuffed Gizmo assistant at Fresh Dinosaurs.
Sticky Lemon was founded mid 2016 by Simone, Lotte & Dorien. Whilst working on other design projects their idea for a quirky and bold brand became more and more serious. Eventually their first backpacks became a reality and Sticky Lemon was born. This brand was concieved for both little, and bigger kids who have an outspoken taste in the way they look. It’s colourful, bold and sunny. Colourblocking is combined with patterns and illustrations. It was a bit of family affair at the New York show which made for an absolute joy presenting the award. Like it’s name Anchovy is a unique kids label with a very strong USP attributed to the brand. With an artistry at the foundation and imagery unlike no other this independent kids label is hard to miss during a trade show. Last Summer at Playtime New York the circle dresses from the ss18 collection ‘hiding from the sun’ really stood out slowly and memorisingly turning on the architecturally designed stand, with gradients of soft pastel colours. The uniqueness of this label is to be celebrated, oh and I forgot to say amongst all this artistry the pieces remain incredibly functional and wearable. We chat with designer and founder Giedre Kose.
This New Year we will be on the lookout once again to discover the most exciting emerging labels in kid’s fashion and design for AW18/19. And, for the first time, we start our search in Italy at Pitti Bimbo with both Florence & myself in attendance for the launch of the awards. The search then moves on to London with Dot to Dot and finally out to the states for Playtime, New York.
For this season’s awards, we have collaborated with the brilliant designer Alejandra Salvatore of Severina kids to create an exclusive One to Watch “Spyglass”. The Spyglasses will be presented to the winners of both the design and the fashion awards at each of the shows. So follow what we are up to at the shows and look out for the best emerging talent in kids fashion & design.
Many months ago we started a conversation with Maria – founder of Frida’s Tierchen (see previous post) proposing the idea of Maria creating a Pirouette One to Watch award designed by Frida’s Tierchen for the Summer edition. Fast forward to present day and Maria has successfully put her unique creative stamp on the award by creating a wolf headpiece to be presented to the Pirouette One to Watch winners in fashion and design at Dot to dot London, Playtime Paris and Playtime New York. Loopy Mango recently crossed over into the world of children’s design by creating a mini range of their popular DIY knitwear boxes. The pieces are gorgeously super chunky which on a little kid looks incredibly cute. Lets face it chunky is in for Aw17, and you don’t get much more chunky than Loopy Mangos fabulous range. The mini DIY kits themeselves are brilliantly giftable, bright and fun. Unbelievably the new mini DIY knit kits aren’t currently stocked in Europe, though this is bound to change very soon. New York has had it’s fair share of snow the past few months which made for an interesting flight to Playtime New York but it was well worth the bumpy arrival. It was great to see many European brands in attendance at the Playtime New York show alongside the many American, South American and Canadian brands. As always it was great to have the opportunity to talk to the designers whilst seeing the new collections at first hand.
Lats week end I had the pleasure to attend Playtime in New York. Playtime is the world’s largest trade show network for children’s collections. It is THE place for all amazing children related products and this year, the New York edition celebrated it’s 10th birthday.
It started with a store in Barcelona, filled with a great assortment of contemporary products for kids. A few years later, Nobodinoz has turned into a label producing furniture, deco, clothing, toys and all things fun and new. Their collections focus on quality, durability and sustainability, keeping in mind that good and beautiful things should also be affordable.
