My Quiet of Gold by Cooper & Gorfer is a striking photographic journey documenting the stories of love, sorrow, and betrayal from rural Kyrgyzstan. Seen at the last Armory show in New York, the photographs stayed with me. I was particularly struck by the intense and mysterious look of this women.
Cooper and Gorfer (Sarah Cooper – USA, 1974 and Nina Gorfer -Austria, 1979) traveled to Kyrgyzstan to collect sagas and stories from conversations and interviews with local inhabitants. The duo have backgrounds in art, architecture, and photography. Their photographic installations move fluidly between reality and imagination, technical and artistic interpretation, collective myth and personal narrative. The two artists began a collaboration in 2006 and are now living and working in Göteborg, Sweden.
My Quiet of Gold is published by Gestalten.
